With the publication of Adele’s first interview in six years, the internet has ceased to exist beyond her revelations about her divorce, her move to LA, and, of course, her weight loss.
When Adele debuted her slimmer figure last year – posting a photo of herself wearing a black minidress to celebrate her birthday – the world was flabbergasted that she hadn’t documented her weight loss for public consumption.
In a world where Love Islanders have dedicated Instagram accounts for what they eat in a day, it was unthinkable that Adele might have lost a significant amount of weight and just… not speak about it. And after the fact came the inevitable headlines – Adele’s Revenge Body was shouted out from every tabloid in the land.
But, says the star herself in her new cover interview for British Vogue, losing weight had nothing to do with the breakdown of her marriage.
“That whole thing of like, ‘Gets Revenge Body’… Oh my god. Suck my dick!” she said.
“It’s ridiculous. I think it’s that people love to portray a divorced woman as spinning out of control, like, ‘Oh she must be crackers. She must’ve decided she wants to be a ho.’ Because what is a woman without a husband?”

How refreshing to hear someone as famous Adele using exercise to, simply, enable her body to do more. Women in particular are relentlessly conditioned to think of exercise as primarily a weight loss tool, or as ‘punishment’ for eating. Being fit and healthy means we can walk or run for longer, we can put together flatpack furniture without an extra set of arms (although I can’t imagine Adele does much of that, admittedly).
She continued, “But I needed to get addicted to something to get my mind right,” she continues. “It could have been knitting, but it wasn’t. People are shocked because I didn’t share my ‘journey’.
Look! More news!
“They’re used to people documenting everything on Instagram, and most people in my position would get a big deal with a diet brand. I couldn’t give a flying f--k. I did it for myself and not anyone else. So why would I ever share it? I don’t find it fascinating. It’s my body.
“People have been talking about my body for 12 years. They used to talk about it before I lost weight. But yeah, whatever, I don’t care. You don’t need to be overweight to be body positive, you can be any shape or size.”
This is the first time Adele has spoken about her weight, despite, as she correctly says, people obsessing over it for her entire career. Perhaps this will set a precedent for a megastar’s music and achievements being more important than what she looks like.
