Today the sad news was announced that legendary actor Alan Rickman had passed away.

To commemorate his brilliant work, here’s a look at ten of his best on screen roles.

Die Hard (1988)

Alan played baddie Hans Gruber in this classic Christmas movie, which was the role that kicked off his career, gaining him wider recognition as an actor. He almost didn’t take the role because it wasn’t the sort of film he wanted to make, but we’re so glad he changed his mind!

Truly Madly Deeply (1990)

Playing the role of Jamie in this rom-com, Alan played a ghost who comes back from the grave to be with his one true love.

Robin Hood: Prince Of Thieves (1991)

No other Robin Hood film can compete, and no other actor can replace Alan’s portrayal of the Sheriff of Nottingham. And you know it’s true (Bryan Adams pun very much intended).

Sense And Sensibility (1995)

In one of his many films alongside Emma Thompson, Alan played Colonel Brandon in this Jane Austen adaption alongside Kate Winslet and Hugh Grant.

Dogma (1999)

Although Alan isn’t on screen that much in this movie, when he is, he absolutely steals the show. He plays Metatron, the voice of God, and no one’s voice was better suited to this role than his.

Galaxy Quest (1999)

A different genre for Alan, who played Alexander Dane in this sci-fi spoof. He showed his capabilities as an actor and was simply hilarious in this comedy flick.

Harry Potter (2001-2011)

In probably one of his most famous roles, Alan played Severus Snape in all eight films of the franchise. We’re so glad he turned down the part of Lord Farquaad in Shrek for this role, because these films just wouldn’t have been the same without him.

Love Actually (2003)

Yeah, okay, we don’t really like Alan’s character in this one (mainly because of his poor choice in the woman he had an affair with), but his part of the story alongside Alan’s good friend Emma Thompson, will always remain one of the most memorable from the film for it’s believability.

Alan Rickman Love Actually

Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber Of Fleet Street (2007)

Another different style of film for Alan, this time a Tim Burton musical special alongside Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter. However, Alan plays villain Judge Turpin and given his previous movie roles, played the part pretty damn well.

Alice in Wonderland (2010)

Playing Absolem the Caterpillar in Tim Burton’s version of Lewis Carroll’s classic, Alan will be reprising his role as the hookah-smoking character in his last ever film for Alice Through the Looking Glass, which is out this year.
