Avril Lavigne breaks down in TEARS as she discusses her Lyme disease diagnosis for the first time on camera

Avril Lavigne broke down in tears as she talked about her struggle with Lyme disease for the first time in public.

Appearing in a filmed segment for Good Morning America, the 30-year-old singer got upset as she set out all the obstacles she’s had to overcome just to get a diagnosis.

“I literally became bedridden last October,” she explained, saying that doctors completely misunderstood her symptoms.

“They would pull up their computer and be like, ‘Chronic fatigue syndrome’. Or, ‘Why don't you try to get out of bed, Avril, and just go play the piano?’ It's like, ‘Are you depressed?’ This went on and off for a month,” she said.

Finally, after eight months of going back and forth between doctors, a specialist eventually found she’d contracted Lyme disease from a tick bite, probably in spring last year when she was bedbound for five months.

Avril also spoke about how support from her fans had helped her get through the next few months, and she got emotional again talking about all the supportive videos and messages.

“Honestly, I felt very, very loved. And it sounds silly saying it, but I really truly did feel my fans through the process,” she added.

Avril’s now halfway through her treatment and says she’s already feeling much better.

She’s set to make a return to music with a special performance of her new single Fly at the Los Angeles Special Olympics World Games opening ceremony next month.
