The Spice Girls have long tantalised us with rumours of a BIG reunion but on their 20th anniversary, it seemed the perfect 90s hook up with the Backstreet Boys was going to clinch it.

But AJ McLean admits plans for a joint tour have "kind of fizzled out".

In an interview with KTU's Cubby & Caroline Show over the weekend, AJ said:

"From what I've heard, they want to do their own tour. I think it's their 20th anniversary, we're back in the studio making a brand new album, so everyone's doing their own thing."

In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Mel B (aka Scary Spice) made it clear the girls want to go BIG and go SOLO.

She said: "We want the stage to ourselves if we're going to do it!"

Speaking for bandmates Nick Carter, Brian Littrell, Howie Dorough and Kevin Richardson, AJ said he's still hopeful they can replicate the success of their joint tour with NKOTB, earning over $40 million with 51 shows:

"God willing, down the road, maybe it could happen. But as of right now it's not happening.

"But I think it would be something awesome if it did happen."

The boys had their first taste of Vegas at the Miss USA beauty pageant on Sunday night where they wowed fans with a faithful rendition of their smash hit "As Long As You Love Me".

Nick Carter told Entertainment Tonight the band has signed a deal with promoters at Live Nation for a test run of Vegas shows.

"If it does really well, then I think that'll open that door and then in future we'll do it (a long term residency).

"So that's definitely going to happen but we're going to do a trial run first."

Maybe the bright lights and big bucks of Vegas will persuade the girls to get on board.
