This beauty brand is under fire for this incredibly offensive product name

Seriously. What were they thinking?

offensive eyeliner

Ohhh, this was all a bit awkward. When UK-based beauty blogger TalontedLex was sent an eyeliner to review from US beauty brand Smith & Cult, she was horrified at its name.

Lex took to Twitter to rage about the eyeliner, which was insensitively named Wax Spastic. She called out the brand, asking how many people had approved the poor choice of name.

As we UK people know the word 'spastic' is an outdated and extremely offensive term for a disabled person.

Obviously, the internet reacted with outrage at the horrendous move. We mean, just what?

In the US, the word doesn't have the same meaning, it means someone who is clumsy. But according to Lex, the US bods were told of the offensive meaning over here before launch.

And they still went ahead with it?? This was their response.

Understandably, this wasn't well-received either.

Meanwhile, some big beauty retailers over here, including NK SPace and Cult Beauty, have said they won't be stocking the product.

Cosmopolitan.com contacted Smith & Cult who confirmed they've removed the product from their range.

They said: "We fully understand the offence caused by the name of our product, and wholeheartedly apologise. We have immediately removed the item from sale.

"Although the understanding of the word in US is very different we have to take responsibility, and recognise that as an international brand we must do better, and will take urgent steps to do this."

We think somebody at Smith & Cult is going to have a very uncomfortable meeting with the big boss.
