Ever thought Benedict Cumberbatch played the role of mega-minded Sherlock a little too well? That he looked just a tad too comfortable doing all of those impossible mathematical sums and outsmarting local bobbies?

Well experts might have found out why. According to genealogists on the website Ancestry, Benedict is 17th cousin to World War Two code-breaker Alan Turing, who he plays in his new film.

Appaz the lineage can be traced back to the 14th century as the pair are both related to the first earl of Somerset, John Beaufort, who was born in ye olde times (1373).

Maybe this explains the actor’s plummy voice and recent fit of traditionalism in announcing his engagement in The Times newspaper?

Miriam Silverman from Ancestry said: "It's amazing to think that when stepping into the role of Alan Turing, he would not only be portraying a world-class code breaker, but a real life relation."

Fantastic as this news undoubtedly is, we’ve just been - oh no - reminded of the fact that we’re not in any way related to the Cumberbatch. And what with his recent - deep breath - engagement, we NEVER will be.
