X Factor wasn’t the route into music for 23-year-old Beth Sherburn, she was spotted two years ago singing as she re-stocked shelves in the fragrance section of a department store and was later given a record deal.

But it was actually sound advice from X Factor judge Cheryl Fernandez-Versini, given to Beth as she waited to perform backstage at a music festival, which inspired her to focus on her music.

Beth told us: “It was a few years ago, and she gave me really nice advice saying ‘I’ve been there, I know how hard it is but keep focused keep working hard. I’m sure you’re going to achieve your goals and achieve your dreams’. She didn’t have to take time out to come and say that to me but it was really nice she did. She also said ‘keep writing’. She’s so nice. I’m a big fan of Girls Aloud anyway so it was brilliant.

“I think Cheryl has definitely been an inspiration because of the advice she gave me. It is hard and at the time you think ‘am I gonna get there?’ so that was really nice what she was saying.”

And Beth is about to step out on tour supporting The Saturdays and she also has a new single out in September, which features American rapper Lil Wayne.

Speaking about the collaboration, Beth said: “I was just working on new material and my management - now his management too - sent the track over because I was getting good vibes from it, and he was like yeah I love it lets collaborate. I’ve spoken to him but I haven’t met him yet because he’s in America and so busy but I hope to meet him soon.”

Beth's single ' Joker featuring Lil Wayne' is out on 21st September and she is on The Saturdays UK tour which kicks off in Glasgow on Sunday.
