It may have been a dramatic 2022 for Wayne and Coleen Rooney, but the couple seemed to be stronger than ever after navigating tough times together.
However, with Wayne, 37, working as manager of DC United in Washington – and the Atlantic Ocean separating them – they have to work hard to keep the romance alive, and an insider tells heat that 36-year-old Coleen can find the situation frustrating sometimes.
“Coleen was more than a little fed up heading into January,” we’re told. “It’s back to being a single parent and trying to juggle everything, and she finds it very infuriating that Wayne is not even in the same time zone. But, instead of talking every day, they are instead using WhatsApp voice notes to send messages, and it’s actually proving to be quite romantic. Sometimes she doesn’t even bother to chat with him – she makes sure the kids get their FaceTime with him and she leaves a voice note.”
The couple have four sons – Kai, 13, Klay, nine, Kit, six and Cass, four – and we’re told that taking care of them by herself in their Cheshire mansion is taking its toll on Coleen, so Wayne is having to find new ways of helping out from afar. Our insider says that he is doing his bit from overseas the best way he knows how – via expensive gifts and exotic holidays. “He’s told Coleen to book out the weekend before Valentine’s Day,” our source reveals.
“It’s half-term, so they are doing a holiday, with her and the kids heading over to somewhere like Barbados or Miami. But he wants them to have a few days on their own, too. It’s exciting for them to be able to plan these holidays, and it’s definitely what is keeping things interesting – she’s joking that she’s going to be having a holiday romance for 2023.”
Wayne may not have a great track record of behaving himself, but insiders say he’s making an extra effort to prove he’s matured, given what a stressful year the family’s had. “So far, he’s behaved really well. There’s been no repeat of previous shenanigans,” our insider shares.
“He had promised Coleen he wouldn’t ever let her down like that again – with the binge drinking and partying. After seeing how broken she was by the court case, and seeing her talk about the problems they’ve had, it really hit home to him, and he swore to make it up to her. He’s really trying to show her how mature he is.”
So, while absence is said to make the heart grow fonder, Wayne is finding ways to make sure that rings true for him and Coleen. “He’s making sure he sends her gifts every week, the kids, too. He doesn’t want to be forgotten!”
