The Rooneys have recently been resigned to a long-distance marriage, with Coleen remaining in Cheshire while Wayne continues his new life 260 miles away as Plymouth Argyle manager. But instead of sending her husband love messages from afar, we’re told Coleen is more concerned about making sure he is getting the basics right and looking after his health. With the former footballer now spending a lot of his time alone, a source tells heat that Coleen has put him on the ultimate health kick.

While their 16-year marriage is said to be stronger than ever, it came as no surprise that homebody Coleen, 38, was reluctant to uproot their four sons to move to the south coast. So when Wayne, also 38, signed a three-year deal as manager of Championship side Plymouth Argyle and moved into a seafront apartment, Coleen – who shares Kai, 14, Klay. 10, Kit, eight, and Cass, five with the footballer – remained in Cheshire, living in their £20million mansion with the boys.

But not having his wife’s TLC on tap is fuelling Wayne’s bachelor lifestyle and giving her cause for concern. ‘Coleen got a bit of a shock when she saw Wayne recently. She’s worried he’s not taking enough care of himself now that he’s living on his own,’ a source tells heat. ‘It was always going to be a big adjustment for him when he gave up playing football professionally. He was at the peak of his fitness during that time – Coleen made sure he ate healthily and he was always running about and playing footie with the boys. Now, she feels he’s not putting himself first, and worries that he’s struggling to cope without her looking after him.

Revealing that Coleen has already put plans in place to get her husband’s fitness back on track, our source says, ‘She’s decided to put him on a bit of health and fitness kick ahead of his 39th birthday next month, as she wants him to look and feel his best when they go away for a few days to celebrate.’

Coleen has previously alluded to her husband putting on weight post-football when she told how she was left dashing to M&S ahead of her Wagatha Christie trial, after Wayne admitted his suits were a tad too snug. Opening up about the fashion emergency, Coleen shared, ‘It was the day before we were going to London and I was like, “Where are all your suits?” He was like, “They don’t fit me!” So I’m like, “Shit!” It had to be a quick fix in Marks & Spencer.’

Having been a WAG since she was a teenager, Coleen is no stranger to the football lifestyle, so we’re told she’s having to take matters into her own hands with some healthy rules for her husband.

‘She knows what Wayne can be like when he’s away – although the club have staff making the team healthy food for lunch, Wayne will be at home by himself in the evenings. He’s not the best cook, so he’ll always take the easy option. Coleen’s told him no more takeaways, so she’s sorting out meal plans as well as making sure he’s busy when he’s not at work,’ the insider shares.

But to keep Wayne on track, this health kick is a family affair. ‘Coleen’s said that he can FaceTime her when he goes to the gym in the evenings and she uses their treadmill at home, so they can keep each other company and motivate each other,’ we’re told.

The insider adds, ‘Wayne is under quite a bit of pressure at work, as it’s not been the best start to the football season. Stress can lead him to not always make the best decisions – but Coleen is a woman on a mission.’
