Coleen Rooney’s fury over Wayne’s drunken mistake

We all know that loose lips sink ships (especially relation-ships) and that some things are better kept private. But we also know that Wayne Rooney is a law unto himself after a few too many drinks. So, it’s hardly surprising that the 34-year-old has found himself in the doghouse yet again after being very indiscreet at a Soccer Aid after-party earlier this month.

And, according to insiders, the former England star has really ballsed it up this time, because he’s committed the one cardinal sin when it comes to upsetting your partner: joking about your sex life with strangers, leaving his famously forgiving wife Coleen apparently fuming.

“Col was humiliated beyond belief when she heard reports about what Wayne had said on his night out,” says an insider close to the WAG, who shares four sons with Wayne – Kai, ten, Klay, seven, Kit, four, and two-year-old Cass – and learnt about her husband’s oversharing at the same time as us last week.

“This has really pushed her over the edge during an already stressful time. She can’t believe he’s crossed a line he’s never crossed before – making fun of their private life.”

According to sources, Wayne had been downing wine at a star-studded bash at the Mottram Hall hotel in Cheshire in early September – after coaching England in Soccer Aid’s celeb-filled charity match – when he joked to one of the TV showrunners that he hadn’t had sex for ages. She then reportedly “went off and repeated it to a group of people, including members of production and Unicef teams”.

Gossip about his remarks soon spread like wildfire and, by the end of the night, Wayne’s alleged quip was the only thing anyone was talking about.

“Coleen has put up with a lot – but she’s always forgiven Wayne because he’s never spoken about their relationship in public, no matter what drunken, idiotic thing he’s done,” says our source. “Talking about the most intimate details of their marriage is a no-go, even in jest, and he knows that. She’s a private person with very traditional values, and she would never dream of joking about her sex life in such a public way. More than that, it breaks the only rule that has kept them together for so long – they are a solid team who always have each other’s backs. It should be them against the world.”

It’s fair to say that Coleen, 34, is well accustomed to dealing with the fallout from one of Wayne’s boozy nights out. Things have been particularly difficult for the couple – who got together when they were teenagers and married in 2008 – ever since Wayne was arrested for drink-driving in 2017, while taking home party girl Laura Simpson, despite Coleen being pregnant with Cass. The family moved to America the following year, after Wayne signed with US club DC United, but he was soon in trouble again – getting arrested at Washington airport for being drunk and disorderly and then courting even more controversy after getting into a barmaid’s car following a drunken night out.

Since moving back to the UK last year, Wayne’s reportedly been better behaved, but as Coleen discovered last week, it takes very little for him to let his guard down and, evidently, say the wrong thing. Let’s not forget, privacy is a sore point for Coleen, especially right now, when all her efforts are focused on her upcoming legal showdown with Rebekah Vardy in their libel case.

Last week, it was reported that the warring WAGs could be going to court within weeks, after Rebekah’s lawyers filed papers at the High Court asking Coleen to explain what she meant in that famous Wagatha Christie post. Rebekah is currently suing her fellow WAG for libel after Coleen accused “Rebekah Vardy’s account” of leaking stories about her to the press, something that Rebekah strongly denies.

As heat has reported previously, Wayne has been trying to convince Coleen to settle things with Becky out of court, but she’s refusing to give in to her opponent’s demands, and is willing to pay millions in legal fees in her bid to see things through. Apparently, it’s caused a lot of tension between the couple and, as we’ve also told you, recent attempts to reignite the romance – including a couple’s trip to Dubai and a night at a hotel without the kids – have only done so much.

Now, we’re told, Wayne’s Soccer Aid gaffe has sent tensions soaring again. Our insider says that for him to have publicly joked about something so personal, when Coleen’s fighting so hard to protect her reputation, has left her feeling at her wits’ end.

“It’s hard enough keeping her head up in public as it is, but now that people are gossiping about her marriage, it feels overwhelming,” says the source. “They’re already under so much stress with the court case looming. Wayne says he doesn’t remember saying anything about their sex life – he says maybe someone else was joking and he agreed to it. Coleen doesn’t really know what to believe, but either way, she’s furious. He’s in the doghouse yet again – but that’s nothing new. He seems to spend half his life in there, so it’s an all-too familiar situation for him to find himself in.”

Last week, it looked like Coleen was exercising some damage control, as she posted pictures from her parents’ 40th wedding anniversary celebrations online – including a shot of her and Wayne looking happy. She also posted a picture of eldest son Kit in his Year Six school uniform, suggesting it’s business as usual at the Rooneys. But, according to our insider, Coleen knows how to put on a brave face and, while she may be beaming in her family snaps, it’s all getting too much for her.

Now, as she gears up for the mother of all celebrity court battles, we’re told she’s looking for every assurance that all future mud-slinging will only ever come from the other side. And that, when the chips are down, her husband will have her back.
