They may have been married for over 12 years, and have four children together, but Wayne and Coleen Rooney still like to make time for each other – and last week, they did just that.
Fresh from their recent holiday to Barbados, the couple had a romantic date night in Manchester before staying at a hotel. And while they managed to enjoy themselves at times, we’re told that the night was very emotional for Coleen, as she continues to deal with her high-profile fallout and upcoming court case with fellow WAG Rebekah Vardy.
“Coleen had wanted to spend some quality time with Wayne, as things between them have been quite tense over the past few months, including some arguments on holiday,” our source says. “With all this stuff that’s been going on with Rebekah and the court case, she’s been quite snappy with him as they’ve clashed over what she should do. So, she wanted to have a night away with Wayne and not think about it. But there were a few cross words between them as they discussed things, and Coleen cried a bit. This whole saga has been so tough on them all. It has really tested her marriage with Wayne, and it shows no signs of stopping. Wayne reassured her that everything was going to be fine, but she can’t help but worry and get upset.”
Becky – wife of Leicester striker Jamie Vardy – is currently suing Coleen for libel after she accused “Rebekah Vardy’s account” of leaking stories about her last October. Becky’s court papers claimed she had been made a “scapegoat” by Coleen, and that she was worried she could lose her unborn baby due to the public humiliation and stress Coleen had put her under. But Coleen is determined to prove she was right and has hired a team of top lawyers to help win the case. But as heat recently told you, Wayne is annoyed with her for carrying on with this and thinks she should just end it all, which they clashed about on holiday.
“It’s been such a stressful year for them, and after Wayne finished the football season, they wanted to go to Barbados and forget about everything that’s been going on,” our insider said. “But that has proved impossible as this Rebekah thing won’t go away and Coleen is determined to see it through, much to Wayne’s disapproval. He thinks she should leave it and move on, but Coleen is refusing and warned him that if he doesn’t support her on this, it could mean the end for their marriage. There have been many rows and arguments over it, but Wayne knows he’s got to back her.”
However, it’s not gone away, and the couple – who are parents to Kai, ten, Klay, seven, Kit, four, and two-year-old Cass – are still at loggerheads over it. “As it gets closer to Coleen and Becky maybe having to meet in court, Coleen is getting more and more furious about everything,” our insider adds. “She knows she is hard to live with at the moment, and that Wayne only has her best interests at heart, but she sometimes feels he could show her more support. But she is trying her best to try to forget things, which is why she organised this night away, just so they could spend some time on their own. Although it was upsetting at times, she feels it did them good.”
As well as the court case, which is due to take place later this year or in early 2021 if they don’t settle out of court, Coleen, 34, has also had to deal with the news that Becky, 38, is being lined up to take part in Dancing On Ice. At the moment, Coleen feels she still has the majority of the public on her side, but that could change if she’s not careful.

“Becky touting herself around and signing up for Dancing On Ice has really got Coleen’s back up,” we’re told. “It’s one thing her giving interviews, and then quite another going on a show that could potentially increase her popularity and get millions of fans on her side. Coleen knows that lots of families watch DOI and she is worried about Becky getting more support from the public if it turns into a sob story, making it look like Coleen is the real ice queen in their situation. Even if it doesn’t happen, it’s agitated Coleen, who is now thinking that she needs to raise her game.”
She’s wondering if she may need to get back into TV to make sure people can see the real her and get her true personality across. “Coleen is planning to fight back and has realised that it’s now or never in terms of getting herself back in the spotlight and reigniting her media career,” our source confirms. “She never felt that comfortable thrusting herself into the spotlight, but everything has changed now. She knows that she brought this court case on herself and she’s aware that it’s a long way off being settled. She wants to balance things out by getting herself back on screen and into the nation’s hearts to remind them all that she’s a good person and that none of this is really her fault. She was always the victim in this, before it got blown out of proportion.”

But Coleen doesn’t want to rush this and needs to make sure that it’s the right thing for her and her family. She’s aware that she’s hot property right now and would be ratings gold, so will be considering all of her options.
“She’s got no end of television offers, so she is hiring a new PR guru to help with a grand comeback into showbiz,” we’re told. “She’s interested in doing things like Bake Off, a fashion range, and a stint of guest hosting on shows like This Morning or The One Show to really test herself and push her out of her comfort zone – anything to cast a big shadow over Becky. Her feeling is that she should be doing things that are classier than competition reality shows. She wants to connect with an audience again, show everyone what she’s really like and make sure that Becky isn’t doing anything to outshine her.”
