Ed Sheeran is going to be in Game of Thrones because why not

Maybe he'll play a tree. He definitely won't play a tree.

Ed Sheeran hit headlines after sixteen of his singles made it into the Top 40 last weekend, but now he's causing a stir for a non-musical reason. A throne-y, medieval-y, sword-based reason (again).

Yep, not content with becoming the entire music industry, Ed will be popping up in the new series of Game of Thrones. Because genuinely why not? He can do anything. If he wanted to be the Queen he probably could right now.

Speaking at the SXSW film festival in Texas, David Benioff and Dan Weiss said they'd been trying to book him for a while, and then Ed tweeted "guess the cats out of the bag" when everyone went apeshit over the news.

Rumour has it that Game of Thrones star Maisie Williams is a huge fan, which is why Ed was targeted - but it's not the first time there's been some musical-Throney crossovers. Coldplay have featured in the past, as have Mastodon and Sigur Ros.

The one thing we're all desperate to know, though, is the one thing that's being carefully kept under wraps: what sort of part he'll be playing. Some are suggesting he could be playing a musician, or maybe he'll be wearing so many prosthetics we won't recognise him.

We reckon he'd made a good iron throne. That seems like top casting. Or, even better, just a normal chair in a room. And nobody references him. He just sits there, being sat on.

More as we have it.
