Katie Papworth, who was suffering from an aggressive form of brain cancer, died earlier this morning.

Her story hit the headlines all over the world last week after she proposed to Ed backstage at a gig at Glasgow's SSE Hydro.

Before her proposal, to which Ed said yes, she presented him with a ring and a picture of a Lego house which she’d painted before she lost her sight due to the illness.

Ed spoke of his heartbreak earlier, telling his fans: “So devastated to hear Katie has passed away. Prayers are with her family.”

After they met, Ed wrote her a note that said, “Dear Katie, lovely to finally meet my wife.”

At the time, Katie’s mum said “Ed loved her artwork and asked if he could keep it for his wall. When she presented the ring he smiled and said, 'I suppose I should say yes. OK.'”

Ed also recorded this heartfelt video message for Katie.
