How’s John dealing with being the Sexiest Man Alive?
[Laughs.] He was actually pretty humble about it all. Me? Perhaps me less so, as I get to tell everybody I’m married to the sexiest man alive.
You were planning to turn his magazine cover into wallpaper. How did that go down?
My plan never materialised, but let’s not remind him about it!
What’s the secret to your relationship with John?
We live in a world now where it’s normal that both parents work and have a career. It’s about staying close and making the time to talk about how the other is feeling and being very clear you love them and are there for them.
Which celeb pals are on your speed dial list?
We’re really good friends with Matt Damon and his wife Luciana. Not only are they great friends, they’re great neighbours. Anne Hathaway [who she starred with in The Devil Wears Prada] and I are really good friends as well. She is a great person, and it’s nice to have another mum who works in the industry to relate to.
How would you feel if Hazel and Violet decided to follow in your showbiz footsteps?
I would prefer that they didn’t, because I don’t ever really want them to be in the spotlight. Having said that, if they were really passionate about it, of course we would support them.
What do they think of your films?
We try to protect them from the industry as much as possible, we just want them to see us as Mum and Dad.
You worked with John on A Quiet Place and the sequel, both of which he directed. What was that like?
Weirdly, for reasons that I can’t totally put into words, I was actually a bit nervous, but the reality was, I had no need to be. It’s really important when filming that you have that trust with your co-star, and there isn’t anybody in this world I trust more than my husband.
Tell us about your new movie, The Smashing Machine…
Dwayne is incredible in it. People are going to see a side to him they haven’t seen before. I absolutely adore working with him, there is never a dull moment on set.
