Lovely news this morning – Emmerdale’s Emma Atkins is pregnant with her first baby.

She’s going off on maternity leave – and her character, vixen Charity Dingle, will get locked up in prison while she’s off. She’s going DOWN for two years over insurance fraud.

Hey, at least we don’t have to get confused over a dodgy cast change all of a sudden. Remember when Cheryl Stark on Neighbours KEPT on changing circa 1996?

And don’t even get us started on Ben Mitchell on EastEnders. There have been at least 17 different actors playing Ben. It’s all most disconcerting, we’ll have you know.

Emma said: “I do have a mixture of emotions going around because obviously I'm leaving for a while.

“I am leaving. Probably for about a year because I'm leaving to have a baby which is really exciting.

“I will miss Emmerdale so much but it is a new little journey in my life that I'm taking on now. Argh!

“I can't wait to come back - hopefully within a year.

“I hope some of you are pleased with the outcome - I know I certainly am, I think it is only right that Charity is brought to justice and goes to prison for two years. But, don't worry, I'm sure she'll be out on good behaviour...

“I would love to think that prison would really change Charity in some respects and teach her a really good lesson.

“I'd love to think that prison would straighten her out in a moral sense.”

Somehow, we reckon we’ll be waiting a rather long time before Charity gets some morals. But congrats, Emma!
