One of the biggest names in fashion, Oscar de la Renta, has died at the age of 82 weeks after completing Amal Alamuddin's wedding dress for her marriage to George Clooney.
The fashion maven passed away last night at his family home in Connecticut. It's not yet been announced what the cause of his death was, but there's speculation it's connected to the cancer diagnosis he received in 2006. A statement from the designer's company read: "While our hearts are broken by the idea of life without Oscar, he is still very much with us. Oscar's hard work, his intelligence and his love of life are at the heart of our company.
"All that we have done, and all that we will do, is informed by his values and his spirit. Through Oscar's example we know the way forward. We will make Oscar very proud of us by continuing in an even stronger way the work that Oscar loved so much." It added that Oscar died surrounded by his family, friends and "more than a few dogs".
Among the famous faces that have been seen in de la Renta dresses are Taylor Swift, who this morning Instagrammed a picture of herself wearing one of Oscar's elaborate creations to the Met Ball earlier this year. She captioned the striking image: "My all-time favorite designer has passed away. Oscar, it was an honor to wear your creations and to know you. In loving memory."
Kristen Stewart, Jennifer Garner, Amy Adams, and Cameron Diaz were also big fans of Oscar's designs and regularly turned to him for red carpet events, as did Zooey Deschanel, Oprah and Penelope Cruz. Sarah Jessica Parker was such an admirer of Oscar's work that a whole episode of Sex And The City was dedicated to him, with her character Carrie lusting over a hot pink balloon skirted dress of his in the final series.
Oscar also dressed countless First Ladies, including Laura Bush, Nancy Reagan and Michelle Obama. He's credited with helping Jackie Kennedy find her unique style during the early 1960s.
