Feminist academic and writer, Germaine Greer, has spoken in criticism of Caitlyn Jenner, accusing her of wanting to ‘conquer’ the limelight from the other female members of her family.
Germaine, whose career reached its height during the second-wave feminist movement, with notable works such as The Female Eunuch, made her comments in response to rumours that Glamour magazine had selected Caitlyn as Woman of the Year in their annual awards.
Speaking on* BBC2’s Newsnight*, she said:
"I think misogyny plays a really big part in all of this.
“That a man who goes to these lengths to become a woman will be a better woman than someone who is just born a woman.
"It seems to me that what was going on there, is that he, she, wanted the limelight that the other female members of the family are enjoying, and has conquered it just like that."
Caitlyn – formerly known as Bruce – announced her decision to identify as a woman earlier this year, and has generally been praised for her bravery and openness.
Germaine’s comments have unsurprisingly not been received well. Germaine appeared on the news show after students tried to stop her planned lecture at Cardiff University due to her 'transphobic' views - a movement that has only gained momentum.
When asked if she was still planning on delivering the talk, she said:
"I’m getting a bit old for all this. I'm 76, I don’t want to go down there and be screamed at and have things thrown at me."
