It was the shade heard ‘round the world! Fresh off the heels of winning their award for Best Pop Video, the ladies of Fifth Harmony also hit the 2017 MTV Video Music Awards stage as a foursome for the first time, and they were there to not just slay but let the world know they are stronger than ever now. Being down one member is not stopping these talented singers from killing the game.
The girls brought it with some amazingly insane and wild dance moves, and in between all of the dancing and singing, they even found a moment to throw not-so-subtle shade at former member Camila Cabello. Clearly the girls are over talking about the “Crying in the Club” singer and her exit from the group, and they’re not letting it define them at all – at least that’s what their performance was telling everyone.
So it all started and ended with Ally Brooke, Normani Kordei, Dinah Jane Hansen, and Lauren Jauregui hitting the stage with a fifth silhouette behind them, and just as things got started the shadow behind them fell off the stage! Yes, they totally did so just that, and everyone noticed. Watch it all unfold in the video below.
The Internet then erupted into a firestorm, with people not believing what they had just seen. Everything from praise to complete shock flooded Twitter, and even some of the celebs in the audience couldn’t believe just how amazing their performance was, including Hailee Steinfeld and Bebe Rexha, who had total fangirl moments on Twitter and in the audience.
And now, the girls themselves are opening up about that performance that left everyone's jaws on the floor. They appeared on Good Morning America and were asked by one of the show's hosts Lara Spencer about that moment, and the girls made it clear they didn't "push" that fifth member off the stage.
"We always get asked all the time if we're getting a fifth member and we wanted to show the world in an artistic way that, hey, the four of us are Fifth Harmony and we're stronger and better than we've ever been. It was such a monumental moment for us. We were at the VMAs, we had rain, we had the splits, we had a mic drop" Ally Brooke explained.
Well, there we have it then. Fifth Harmony came to do more than just slay, but make their mark as superstars — and they did exactly that. Though, if this performance proved anything, it’s that there’s clearly no love lost between Camila and her former band mates. We can’t help but wonder if the Havana singer will have anything to say about now her shadow figure? We’ll just have to wait and see.
