Gareth Gates has hit back at claims that his relationship with Faye Brooks ended over his 'controlling' behaviour.

Earlier this year the Coronation Street actress and former pop star got engaged, with Gareth proposing with a four-carat diamond ring.

However, it wasn't to last and earlier this month the pair announced they had called off their engagement with reports that the Pop Idol star 'took back her ring'.

According to The Sun, Faye called time on their relationship because Gareth's alleged "controlling" behaviour raised red flags for her.

A source said: "Faye is such an independent and strong woman and she found Gareth's controlling nature hard.

"He was desperate to manage her and take charge of her career but she really wasn't keen on the idea. He kept pushing for it and in the end she had enough."

However the 35-year-old singer has now hit back at the reports, with a rep for the star branding the reports "absolute rubbish".

They explained: "I don’t know who is feeding the press these made up stories! I’m sure if you even asked Faye whether these stories are true, she’d say exactly the same.

"Gareth has never and would never have any interest in managing Faye’s career. He wouldn’t know where to start with managing an actress!"

Shortly after the couple's split Gareth liked a sultry photo of Love Island's Belle Hassan on Instagram.

This isn't the first time Gareth and Faye have called it quits, last year September the Corrie star announced they had split on Twitter.

She wrote: "Unfortunately @Gareth_Gates and I are choosing to take some time apart.

"We remain the very best of friends. We’d like to Thank you for all your support over the years x".

Despite their public break up, a few months later they announced they were engaged with Gareth singing a 17 minute long song about their six year relationship.
