Gigi Hadid did an amazing job hosting her first American Music Awards this weekend, right? The supermodel looked gorgeous and might even land her own AMA one day, after news of her secret singing career came to light…
Gigi and her co-host Jay Pharoah had the crowd in stitches for most of the night, but there was one moment that didn't go down too well.
Gigi did an incredible Melania Trump impression live on air (that’s the future FLOTUS and wife to Donald Trump, FYI), and Gigi is taking some stick on social media. You can relive the impression here…
People are even calling Gigi racist for her impression of Slovenian Melania. "Making fun of someone's accent? Cheap" wrote one Twitter user, while another said "You insulted over 61 million Americans. We won't forget".
Well. This is awkward.
In response to the backlash, Gigi released a statement on her Twitter page. She even handwrote it and everything, to prove she means it! Of course even her handwriting is chic...
In the note, Gigi claimed that she "removed or changed anything in the script that I felt took the joke too far", but that she thought Melania would be chilled about the whole impression sitch.
"I too have been the center of a nationally televised comedy skit that poked fun at my actions, and was able to find the humor in it. I believe Melania understands show business and the way shows are written and run".
We get it – making fun of people's accents is not cool. We hope boyfriend Zayn Malik is comforting Gigi after his AMA win – even if he did forget to mention her in his acceptance speech.
