Godfather actor Alex Rocco dies age 79

US actor Alex Rocco, best known for his role in The Godfather and The Simpsons, has died of cancer aged 79.

His daughter, Jennifer, announced his death on Saturday.


Rocco, whose career spanned over five decades in film and television, played Las Vegas casino boss, in The Godfather and won an Emmy for his role in 1990s sitcom The Famous Teddy Z.

He also voiced the studio boss, Roger Meyes Jr, behind Itchy and Scratchy, in *The Simpsons, *and with his distinctive voice could also be heard in Family Guy and the 1998 animated feature Bug's Life, where he voiced Thorny.

His most recent role was alongside Matt LeBlanc as his father on BBC Two's Episodes.

Rocco was born in Boston on 29 February 1936 - as Alessandro Federico Petricone Jr - and studied acting under the late Star Trek actor, Leonard Nimoy.

He leaves behind wife Shannon Wilcox, son Lucien, his daughter and a grandson.
