Great British Bake Off: Iain “#Bingate” Watters is backing Tamal Ray to win

And he reckons Tamal's this series' heartthrob, too (but we knew that already)

Ahh, #Bingate – we remember you SO well. You made week four of the last series of the Great British Bake Off unforgettable, and helped us through work while you were at it, with all those silly memes and all those office bantz that came after.

Iain Watters might have binned his baked Alaska after Diana Beard took his ice cream out of the fridge early (insert your view here about whether it was accident or sabotage, we’ve still not decided a year later), but that doesn’t mean that the man has stopped baking.

Neither has he stopped watching Bake Off – despite bingate, Iain still loves a bit of Paul Hollywood action. Ah, don’t we all.

After Iain was spotted working on a university building site instead of binning baked Alaskas, eternally, like we’d imagined the beardy, bakey god to be doing, we thought we’d better grab a chat with him – and it turns out he is TOTALLY team Tamal.

**Are you watching the Bake Off this year, Iain?

**Yes, I am watching it, yes!

What do you think of Tamal? He’s the favourite to win at the moment…

I’ve liked him from the start. I really admire his style of baking. I think the flavour combinations he uses are great. He’s been my favourite from the start.

Oh hi there, Tamal...
Oh hi there, Tamal...

He’s the nation’s heartthrob as well…

He is as well, yes. That always helps!

You were the hearththrob with the beard last year. What would you say to Tamal about female attention?

He seems like he’s got his head screwed on. He seems a chilled out character, he’s got the same temperament I have, I think. He has his own attitude for dealing with it. But it’s always flattering getting people commenting on your appearance! I think he’s quite down to earth, so he’ll deal with the attention quite well.

Will he be OK when the fame ends?

I think he will be, yeah.

**Should he keep his day job as well as baking? Tamal's a doctor... **

The contestants that are on the show, most of them go back to their day job. Everyone continues their day jobs throughout the show. There’s only a small fraction of people who go on to bake as their career. I’ve been back to my day job on the building site straight away since we filmed it. But I do different bits of baking stuff on the side, and I do charity things too. It’s nice to give something back and put your fame to good use.

And you’re definitely team Tamal?

Yes, definitely team Tamal. 100 per cent.

The Great British Bake Off is on tonight, 8pm, BBC One.
