It goes without saying, that this article contains spoilers for _Grey's Anatomy f_ans. BIG ONES. So don't read on if the very idea of that freaks you out.

American fans of the show got a shock last night, when major character, hunky Dr Derek Shepherd, played by Patrick Dempsey, was killed off.

Yep, McDreamy is no more!

Series creator Shonda Rhimes created a shock twist for fans by killing the doctor off - and released a statement about the decision:

"Derek Sheperd is and will always be an incredibly important character - for Meredith, for me and for the fans. I absolutely never imagined saying goodbye to our "McDreamy"" she said.

"Patrick Dempsey's performance shaped Derek in a way that I know we both hope became a meaningful example - happy, sad, romantic, painful and always true - of what young women should demand from modern love. His loss will be felt by all".

The show also announced Dempsey's departure:

"After 11 seasons on Grey's Anatomy, Patrick Dempsey is moving on to pursue other interests. Dr Derek Sheperd is an iconic character and we've been proud to be the home of 'McDreamy" and the 'Mer/Der' story".

Apparently Patrick Dempsey's character is killed off after witnessing a horrible car crash and tending to those injured on the scene. In a horrible twist of fate, the neurosurgeon is hit by another car driving away from the scene - and ends up in hospital on life support. After botched care in a hospital, the doctor is declared brain dead, and his wife Meredith turns off his life support machine.
