Asked by Oprah if she was thinking of self-harm and having suicidal thoughts at some stage, Meghan replied: 'Yes. This was very, very clear. Very clear and very scary. I didn't know who to turn to in that. 'Meghan said she later asked a senior royal about the possibility of seeking inpatient care, and was told it wouldn't be possible because it 'wouldn’t be good for the institution'.

'You just said your dad stopped taking your calls,' Oprah said. 'Why?'

'Because I took matters into my own hands,' Harry said. 'It was like I need to do this for my family. This is not a surprise to anybody; it's really sad that it's got to this point, but I've got to do something for my own mental health, for my wife's, because I could see where this is headed.'

Harry also said the Queen wasn't surprised by their decision to stand back, as they discussed it with her three times prior to the announcement.
