Sad relationship news today as James McAvoy and Anne-Marie Duff have announced they are divorcing after almost a decade of marriage.

The Scottish actor and his wife, who share six-year-old son, Brendan, revealed the sad news to People magazine, saying the decision was not an easy one.

They said: "It is with tremendous sadness that we have come to the decision to divorce.

"We enter this next phase with continued friendship, love and respect for one another and the shared focus of caring for our son.

"We ask that you respect our and, most importantly, our child’s privacy during this time."

The pair first met while working on the first series of Channel Four’s Shameless where they played a couple before becoming one in real life.

They wed in a private ceremony in 2006 and kept their relationship under-wraps throughout their marriage.

James told The Washington Post in 2007 how he and Anne-Marie managed to keep to themselves despite both their successful Hollywood careers, saying: "We don't talk about each other much and we don't turn up together at lots of events. We both really rejoice in having a normal life."
