Joey Essex’s DJ compilation albums have done surprisingly well this year. Well enough, it seems, to convince the star that he has what it takes to become a bona fide pop star.
Even though the 24-year-old admits that singing isn’t his strongest point, he doesn’t think this will get in the way of rocking out on the stage.
"I’m gonna learn to play guitar," he told the Daily Mirror. "I reckon I could be a pop star. I can’t really sing but to be a pop star all you have to do is stand there and play guitar, then talk over it."
Bit cynical, eh Joey?
He seems to have taken his surprising success with his mixtape album *Essex Anthems *(Joey's never really learnt to DJ) as proof that even though he lacks the requisite musical talent, he'll be a chart topper in no time.
"I sold more copies of my album than Cheryl, over 80,000," he said. "Someone asked if I could DJ and I was like, 'I’ve never DJ’d in my life.' And they were like, 'But you’ve got a best-selling album!' But I just picked tracks I liked. I think that’s why I do all right, though, because I’m honest."
What do you reckon – Joey Essex: the next Ed Sheeran? We're reserving judgement until we get to see just how good these lip syncing skills of his are.
