It’s not a good start to the weekend for Justin Bieber and Usher. A judge has ruled that the choruses of two versions of their hit song Somebody To Love are similar enough to another song for the case to go to trial.
Two songwriters claim the pair illegally copied parts of a song they wrote and now they want $10 million (£6million) in damages.
De Rico, real name Devin Copeland, and Mareio Overton alleged the song shares the same beat and has similar chords and lyrics to their track.
The lawsuit was originally brought forward in 2013 but it was dismissed. However a judge has now decided the case can go to court.
“After listening to the Copeland song and the Bieber and Usher songs as wholes, we conclude that their choruses are similar enough and also significant enough that a reasonable jury could find the songs intrinsically similar,” judge Pamela Harris said to the appeals court.
They aren’t the only singers who’ve faced an action that could have huge consequences on their bank balances.
Earlier this year Pharrell Williams and Robin Thicke were told to pay millions to the family of Marvin Gaye after a jury ruled that their song Blurred Lines infringed the copyright of Marvin’s track Got To Give It Up.
