Justin Theroux has broken his social media silence following the announcement of his split from Jennifer Aniston earlier this month.

He posted an adorable picture of him and some puppies to Instagram with the caption: "Texas!!! ⭐️ Another very inspiring visit with the incredible people and pups @austinpetsalive. I cannot understand how they do what they do, day after day, so consistently and lovingly to save so many dogs and cats. I HIGHLY recommend going in and getting your nose bit by a toothless baby pitbull. Thes two aren’t yet ready to go, but when they are go get em...🐶🐾".

The couple, who were married in August 2015, released a joint statement regarding the separation.

It read: "We are two best friends who have decided to part ways as a couple, but look forward to continuing our cherished friendship," they said.

"Normally we would do this privately, but given that the gossip industry cannot resist an opportunity to speculate and invent, we wanted to convey the truth directly."

"Above all, we are determined to maintain the deep respect and love that we have for one another," the statement added.

Justin and Jen, who reportedly met on the set of film Wanderlust, lived together in a mansion in Bel Air.

Jennifer had recently been interviewed in Architectural Digest about the property. In it, she is quoted as saying: "I look around at my husband and my dogs and our home, and there's nowhere else I want to be."

There are now a range of theories about why the couple have split - and sources have claimed that they had been fighting for a while about where to live - with Justin preferring to live in New York, and Jen preferring LA.

A source told Entertainment Tonight: “Justin has a very diverse friend group, and he likes that they're not all 'in the industry. He's friends with people in the restaurant world, writers, comedians, artists, tattoo artists. It's an eclectic group and he doesn't have that type of network in LA."

"Justin can hop on his [motorcycle], walk in the neighborhood, hang at a bar and all that without being bothered, but for Jen, the paparazzi are all over her," the source noted.

“He really wanted her to be comfortable [in New York]."
