Katy Perry appears to have hit back at Taylor Swift over an interview in which Tay-Tay kinda hinted at there being some beefy history between them. Sit down, because there’s a whooooole lotta backstory to this one.
We open with Taylor’s 2013 Red Tour, which came off the back of her incredibly successful album. All good, all great. But wait – what’s this? Katy Perry trying to lure some of Taylor’s stage dancers away from her after the tour started? Oh HELL no.
Anyway, it looks like that’s where the trouble between the pair of them started, because Taylor has now written a song for her upcoming album, 1989, about the beef.
The track, Bad Blood, is about “another female artist Swift declines to name”, Rolling Stone reports. In Taylor’s own words: “For years, I was never sure if we were friends or not. She would come up to me at awards shows and say something and walk away, and I would think, ‘Are we friends, or did she just give me the harshest insult of my life?’”
Then, last year – AKA WHEN KATY TRIED TO HIRE TAYLOR’S ACTUAL TOUR DANCERS – the unnamed female artist “did something so horrible” that Taylor assumed they were sworn enemies from then on.
“It wasn’t even about a guy!” Taylor told the music bible.
“It had to do with business. She basically tried to sabotage an entire arena tour. She tried to hire a bunch of people out from under me. And I’m surprisingly non-confrontational – you would not believe how much I hate conflict. So now I have to avoid her. It’s awkward, and I don’t like it.”
But is that the ONLY reason behind their beef? Unlikely – both Taylor and Katy have dated singer-songwriter/all-round-scruffbag John Mayer, so maybe there’s an element of jealousy there too.
Anyway, Katy has responded to the interview dramz with an incredible tweet.
Wow. Looks like the ball’s in Taylor’s court now…
