Their relationship had been quietly blossoming behind-the-scenes for years before they made their red carpet debut in 2019, but now this A-list couple’s low-key romance has fast become a love that the romantics among us are seriously fawning over.
After meeting at a party back in 2009, Hollywood legend Keanu Reeves, 61, and artist Alexandra Grant, 52, were close friends and collaborators before their relationship evolved into a love affair.
And now, a source tells us that after Alexandra was spotted wearing a diamond ring at the premiere of From the World of John Wick: Ballerina back in June, the gorgeous duo have taken the next big step, and have privately gone ahead and married in secret during a European getaway over the summer.
The insider says, ‘It happened earlier this summer, in Europe, it was very spontaneous. They’ve gone back and forth for so long, at one point they had the whole thing planned for last year and then work came up for Keanu and the timing was completely thrown off so they had to put a pause on the wedding plans.
‘But they’re now saying it was for the best because they’re both really happy with the way they ended up doing it, with just the two of them. They’re both so private so they love that it’s just their little secret, not something they have to share with the world.’
Keanu, of course, has a career in Hollywood that has spanned for four decades, most notably for his roles in the John Wick and Matrix franchises.
However, while Alexandra is lesser known in acting circles, she has paved her own way as a successful artist, author and professor outside of her romance with Keanu.
Opting to keep her naturally grey hair, much like Keanu, Alexandra wears and does whatever she wants, and her quiet confidence shines.
‘I feel very confident in the relationship on the red carpet. I feel confident on it alone,’ she has previously said.
And after revealing that she and Keanu ‘push each other’ in their respective careers, our source says Alexandra has had a hugely positive influence on Keanu after his history of tragedy.
‘Alexandra has become such a driving force in his life,’ the insider says.‘They’ve been partners for a very long time, with their book [‘An ode to Happiness’] at first and their joint art projects and now they don’t like to spend a lot of time apart,
‘Keanu completely trusts her judgement, he thinks she's brilliant and he gets her advice on everything. If he’s going to take a movie he wants to know she’s on board because she typically travels with him and seems more than happy to do it.
‘She still has her art career which is going strong, so she does travel for shows and if he can Keanu will go with her and be her support system, it’s a two way street.’
After becoming a household name when he starred in the first Matrix movie back in 1999, there’s been an abundance of stories from fans describing Keanu as one of the most ‘down-to-earth’ and genuine celebrities they’ve ever met.
But there’s also always been a serious side to him after experiencing tragedy when his former long-term girlfriend Jennifer Syme, gave birth to their stillborn daughter, Ava, in 1999. The former couple split soon after and Jennifer later died in a car accident, just two years after their daughter’s death.
‘I don’t think you ever work through it. Grief and loss, those are things that don’t ever go away. They stay with you,’ Keanu has said.
Keanu appeared to remain single for nearly two decades before going public with Alexandra – a milestone our source says made those close to him incredibly ‘grateful’ for her.
‘Anyone who knows Keanu will tell you Alexandra has been good for him,’ the insider says. ‘He tends to be on the more serious side but with Alexandra he’s much lighter, she definitely brings out the more fun and playful side of him.
‘Keanu’s had so much tragedy and loss in his life, everyone close to him is grateful he’s found someone who can give him peace and stability. He’s a very private man so you won’t hear him gushing too openly about Alexandra and their relationship but among friends he’s very quick to praise her, he always says how lucky he is to have found someone that brings out the best in him.’
Alexandra also isn’t one to become embroiled in the ’fame’ aspect of Keanu’s career and instead is more likely to encourage him to take on more creative challenges.
‘Any deals you do with Keanu these days has to factor in Alexandra – she travels with him, she helps him pick his movies, and she kind of runs his life, or a big chunk of it, at least,’ a source recently said.
Now our insider adds, ‘His friends and family all really like her too. She’s so authentic and sincere, she doesn’t play games and she’s not trying to ride his coattails for fame.
‘She’s also helped him expand his vision for his career, she encouraged him to do this Broadway play [‘Waiting for Godot’] which has been huge for him.’
While Alexandra rarely speaks about their romance publicly, earlier this month, the visual artist did confirm that their relationship was still going strong, posting a snap of a birthday cake with ‘Keanu’ sweetly iced on top and writing, ‘To Keanu, I am so grateful for your love and partnership’.
And the source says that despite choosing to keep their marriage a secret for now, the couple hope to celebrate their love with their friends and family very soon and will, at that time, announce it more publicly.
‘Eventually they do want to have the big celebration and once they do that of course it will become public record, but for now they’re keeping to themselves,’ the insider says.
‘That being said, you can tell they’re in this newlywed bubble, even after all these years together, taking that step has definitely changed things and deepened things.
‘And when they do finally have the big wedding celebration there will be plenty of happy faces there to toast them and their marriage.’
