Lamar Odom has reportedly been having “joyful” talks with his children after he woke from a coma and his ventilator was removed on Friday.
The basketball player was rushed to hospital on Tuesday when he was found unconscious at legal Nevada brothel Dennis Hof’s Love Ranch South, after allegedly taking a cocktail of drugs, alcohol and sexual stimulants.
It is thought he suffered a number of strokes, a heart attack and organ failure and he was placed in a medical coma by doctors.
But the former LA Lakers sportsman is apparently now breathing on his own, without a ventilator, and has been having short conversations with his children – Destiny and Lamar Jr. - whilst drifting in and out of sleep.
A source told HollywoodLife: “He’s surrounded by his kids, aunts and cousins. His room is very peaceful and filled with love.
“He opens his eyes, talks softly to his kids for a few joyful moments and then goes back to sleep.
“Everyone feels it’s honestly a miracle. There is no other explanation.”
Lamar’s estranged wife and Keeping Up With the Kardashians co-star Khloe Kardashian has been sleeping at his bedside and he first communicated with her yesterday, saying: “Hey, baby.”
He is now using an oxygen mask to breathe rather than a ventilator as doctors try to wean him off life support.
The star was reportedly given a 50/50 chance of survival but it has now been revealed he was never without oxygen which is critical to improvement in his condition.
His respirations were 6-8 breaths a minute when he was first treated by paramedics – normal is 12-20 – according to TMZ.
And while it is not clear just how well Lamar will recover, doctors are hopeful he has not suffered any significant brain damage.
Both the Kardashians and Lamar’s family issued statements and asked on social media for fans to pray after the star was taken ill.
In a joint statement, the Kardashians said: “As a family, we’ve decided to hold off on publishing content across our apps while we continue to support and pray for Lamar. Thank you for your kindness and understanding during this difficult time.”
Lamar’s children said: “Thanks for your outpouring of prayers and support for our dad. We are here with our family and friends. We appreciate everyone respecting our privacy at this time. We ask for your continued prayers.”
