They split up over a year ago, but in a new documentary, Liam Payne reveals that he and Cheryl are still very close – and says the mother of his two-year-old son Bear is “the most important” person in his life.
heat has had a sneak peek at Sky One’s upcoming Ant Middleton And Liam Payne: Straight Talking, in which the former One Direction star opens up about his life with Cheryl and Bear and – giving hope to all fans of Chiam – tells how he still relies on his 36-year-old ex to help get him through the tough times in his life.
Speaking about becoming a dad at the age of 23, Liam tells ex-SAS man Ant during their trip to Namibia, “Becoming a dad at such a young age, it’s such a difficult thing. And I think I built fatherhood up so much in my head that it kind of messed me up to start with.
"I started in a bad place with it. I think it spooked me out early on, and I was just worried I would not be enough to look after the both of them. They’re so important to me – Cheryl as well. She’s one of the most, if not the most, important people in my life."

And even though he admits his home life is “problematic” due to him being away so much and not always being able to see Bear, he says he knows that Cheryl will always be there for him because they have had very similar lives.
“Even though we’re not together, Cheryl’s always there for me. I’m lucky I have someone who understands what I’m going through. The one thing I was missing as a man in the relationship I had, was a level understanding about what she was feeling about stuff.
"I think I learnt through being away that, while I want to protect her, there’s a big part of her that wants to protect me.”

It’s thought Liam filmed the doc this summer, before he went official with new girlfriend Maya Henry. And while he has since spoken about his love for the 18-year-old model, in the show Liam, 25, is happy to address speculation that he and Cheryl may get back together.
When asked about a reunion, Liam laughs and says, “I don’t know about that! If she plays her cards right. I’m going to get a slap for this when I get home."
He also says that, while they “grew apart” due to him being away so much , as well as “having a child in the mix”, they now get on “genuinely well”. But he admits he will find it hard if Cheryl – who is currently single – settles down with somebody else and Bear has a stepdad.

“I think that’s the most difficult part of it,” he reveals. “I just hope she’s happy, more than anything. She deserves it. She works really hard, she’s a great mum and she just needs to find happiness in the right places. The same way I do.
"It’s definitely something I’ve thought long and hard about... We’ve got to find our own peace with it and cross those bridges when we come to them.
"But for now, it’s good, it’s nice. I love it. Going over to their place and hanging out and doing whatever and watching TV."
