Yes, you read that headline right. Sweet, innocent, ‘butter wouldn’t melt’ octogenarian Mary Berry has opened up about the time she was actually arrested on suspicion of drug trafficking while on a trip to the US.
The baking queen’s clandestine past was unearthed during an appearance on The Graham Norton when she revealed she had been arrested 25 years ago.
“I was going to the US to do some cookery demonstrations and was worried that there might be problems so I weighed out all the ingredients – flour, sugar – and put them all in little plastic bags,” she told Graham on the show.
You can see where this is going, right?
She continued: “When I arrived at the airport the sniffer dogs made a bee-line for me. Suddenly I was surrounded by uniformed people and my assistant and I were put in separate cells.”
Mary then proceeded to dig herself a deeper hole with the law, seemingly exposing herself as a connect in some form of transatlantic drugs cartel.
“It was alarming,” she revealed. “When I was asked if was going to make money from the stuff, I said, “I do and my fee has already been agreed.”
OH, Maz! Perhaps this whole baking thing is merely a guise for her real life as a kingpin in the criminal underbelly of the light entertainment world?
