They’re making a lot more money without us holding them back

You know a relationship’s really over when they return your stuff. Or – in this case – the £2.4million that taxpayers spent renovating their royal residence.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have paid back the public money spent on Frogmore Cottage, in a move that is said to have “surprised” royals and proved the couple really are officially done with the UK.

Last week it was revealed that the couple – who quit their royal roles back in January – had been paying installments of £18k a month, and are now “relieved and pleased” to have paid a final lump sum. A spokesperson confirmed, “A contribution has been made to the Sovereign Grant by the Duke of Sussex,” adding that it “fully covered the necessary renovation costs of Frogmore Cottage”.

But Palace insiders added that the money came “as something of a surprise”, and proved to any doubters that Harry is deadly serious about this “divorce” from his home country. One royal commentator said, “[This shows] that their divorce from Britain is permanent, while removing any pretence that they might still have a future role in the Royal Family.”

It follows news that Harry, 36, and Meghan, 39, have signed a £150million mega-deal with Netflix. The couple, who now live in the US, will be producing a series of programmes, aiming to “inform but also give hope” – and more importantly, it means they’ll no longer be relying on Prince Charles for handouts. Until recently, the 71-year-old Prince of Wales had been supporting his son, but after the Netflix news broke, reports claimed he’d “cut off” the private funding.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle met in London in July 2016.

It’s not the only big-money deal the couple – who married in May 2018 and have 16-month-old son, Archie – have signed recently. They are said to be working with The Harry Walker Agency, which provides motivational speakers for events. It’s thought they could make as much as $1m per speech, and they’ve asked for the royal treatment.
