Controversial singer and rapper Nicki Minaj has spoken out about Anaconda, the single that - while reaching number 2 on the American billboard charts - ruffled a few feathers thanks to the accompanying music video and lyrics that are, to be fair, sort of mean.
The main criticism, apart from the sheer amount of ass featured in the vid, was that it celebrated women with big bums, but put down those born with smaller derrieres (that's French for bum, btw) - to combat this, Nicki's been making some interesting, if confusing, statements in a recent interview with Billboard magazine.
'Everything we see that's labeled as beautiful is very skinny,' she says. 'In the song, I kind of say, "F*** them skinny girls." But it's all love. I consider myself a skinny girl.'
Confusing when you think about the song, and the way it supposedly celebrates the girls who perhaps aren't that skinny. And the fact that she is a bit mean about skinny girls. Is she being mean about herself, then? It's all very unclear.
'I went overboard with the video to show that I'm not going to hide. And those big-booty dancers I have, they're not going to hide. Black girls should feel sexy, powerful and important too,' she said by way of explanation. Which isn't really an explanation at all.
Er, maybe just don't be mean to people in songs? That'd probably be easier, Nicki.
