Some heart-warming – but also sad – news now.

Olympic long jump champ Greg Rutherford carried an injured deer to safety for two miles after discovering that she couldn’t move as she’d broken her leg.

He was out walking his dogs in the countryside near his home when he discovered the hurt doe – which he named Doris. He described Doris as “relatively heavy”.

Greg tweeted:

He then called an animal hospital, who came and looked at poor Doris.

Sadly, Doris had to be put down as her injuries were so severe :(

Nurse Clare Campbell told the Mirror: ‘We are still happy she was rescued because otherwise she would have taken days to die in agony in the wild. At least we were able to give her pain relief and keep her warm and dry.”

Greg has been praised for his quick thinking – which saved Doris from a prolonged and painful death.

PETA Director Mimi Bekhechi said:

“Greg Rutherford is a gold medallist who showed he also has a heart of gold. We hope his actions will serve as an inspiration to others to help animals in need."

Well done, Greg – you made poor Doris’ final hours far more comfortable than they could have been. You are a PROPER champion.
