Rebekah Vardy’s revenge on Coleen Rooney: ‘Two can play that game’

It’s been just over a year since Coleen Rooney accused “Rebekah Vardy’s account” of leaking fake stories about her to the press, and the fallout from it is still going strong. Earlier this month, Coleen – who is being sued by Becky for defamation – filed her 55-page defence, in which she claimed her former friend was in cahoots with The Sun newspaper and that she was desperate to be famous. She even brought up a kiss-and-tell Becky sold about Peter Andre after a one-night stand in 2001.

Understandably, Becky is furious, especially as the court case could overshadow her taking part in Dancing On Ice, which she has signed up for. Now, we’re told, she has vowed not to let Coleen get away with this.

“Becky feels as though Coleen is trying to drag her reputation through the mud and she’s furious,” says heat’s insider. “It seems like Coleen is trying to paint her as the villain, which could sabotage any chance she has of success on Dancing On Ice. What’s really worrying Becky is what else Coleen and her legal team might have up their sleeves. She wants to appeal to housewives and try to change the narrative about what’s been put out there. Right now, she is worried that some women will think she’s not a girl’s girl, especially if they believe she is someone who can’t keep secrets. She’s scared that she could work really hard for DOI, only for Coleen to drop another bombshell or drag up the past, like she has with the Peter Andre story.”

As well as bringing up the exposé, in which Becky likened Pete’s manhood to “a miniature chipolata”, Coleen, 34, also accused Becky, 38, of switching seats at Euro 2016 to sit behind her to ensure she was photographed. Coleen’s legal team claim that Becky – who wrote a special “Mrs Vardy’s Euro 2016 Diary” for The Sun during the championships – moved from her allocated seat in order to sit behind Coleen at the England vs Wales match “so that she would guarantee her appearance in the media”. According to Coleen’s lawyers, when Becky was asked to move by an FA liaison officer, because the seats had been reserved for FA security, Becky’s guests “refused and were abusive to the liaison officer”.

Two years later, at the World Cup in Russia in 2018, Coleen – whose husband Wayne had retired from England duty by then – claims that Becky colluded with a news and photographic agency, suggesting that she was paid for tipping them off about a WAGs trip to a St Petersburg restaurant.

But Becky – who got together with husband Jamie in 2014 and has three children with him, as well as two others from previous relationships – has always denied Coleen’s claims, and we’re told she will not take this lying down. She is ready to bring up the problems that Coleen has had in her own marriage with Wayne – including claims he has cheated on her several times in the past – and highlight the issues in their relationship.

“Becky knows she has a very strong marriage with Jamie, so there are no skeletons in her closet. She says she will bring up Wayne’s seedy past if she has to,” we’re told.

“Becky has let it be known to Coleen that two can play that game – and that her life isn’t as perfect as she makes out on Instagram and in interviews, especially when Wayne has been misbehaving. Becky has said that if Coleen and her legal team continue to try to drag up negative things, then she will speak her mind on TV, directly to the public – just as Coleen accused her publicly. Some of their mutual friends do feel as though Coleen is playing with fire. At the end of the day, Becky is the one who’ll be on TV promoting and competing in Dancing On Ice, and she could easily use her stage to put some home truths to Coleen.”

The insider adds that Becky is also keen to show off to the world just how happy she is, and will be posting lots of family shots on Instagram – she is gearing up for a five-star holiday abroad before DOI and the court case start to take her mind off things. But, we’re told, Coleen – who has four sons with Wayne – will not let Becky’s apparent smugness upset her.

“Coleen already feels Becky has done enough damage and she wants to move on from this as quickly as possible,” our Rooney insider says. “She’s preparing herself for what Becky might say, even if it’s just subtle digs in her interviews, but she won’t let this break her. Yes, Wayne has done some stupid things and Coleen herself has admitted that she’s thought about divorcing him, but she decided forgive him and she just wants a happy life for the boys. She never meant for this to get so personal, but Becky is the one who has taken it to court and Coleen needs to give her side of the story. All of her recent allegations against Becky are part of her defence in the defamation claim – if it wasn’t for Becky bringing that, she wouldn’t have had to say any of the things she has.”

The source adds, “Coleen doesn’t see what her own marriage has to do with any of this, but both of them are determined to be proved right.”
