Snapchat has been 'shamed' by superstar singer Rihanna and her fans after serving an advert for a game called 'Would You Rather?!' that asked users if they'd 'slap Rihanna' or 'punch Chris Brown'. The 'Wild Thoughts' singer took to Snapchat's rival, Instagram, to post her anger at the advert. She wrote, 'Now SNAPCHAT I know you already know you ain’t my fave app out there! But I’m just trying to figure out what the point was with this mess!
'I’d love to call it ignorance, but I know you ain’t that dumb! You spent money to animate something that would intentionally bring shame to DV victims and made a joke of it!!!
'This isn’t about my personal feelings, cause I don’t have much of them… but all the women, children and men that have been victims of DV in the past and especially the ones who haven’t made it out yet… you let us down! Shame on you. Throw the whole app-oligy away.'
Snapchat released a statement that claimed the advert was a mistake. The statement read, 'The advert was reviewed and approved in error, as it violates our advertising guidelines. We immediately removed the ad last weekend, once we became aware. We are sorry that this happened.'
Below is the advert that was served out on Snapchat. The company say they have now banned the advertiser from their app.
According to the New York Times, Snapchat's shares have fallen 4% since the incident.
Rihanna was in a relationship with Chris Brown when he caused her injuries In 2009. Chris Brown was charged and plead guilty to felony assault, which resulted in five years of probation.
