Ever since the news of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s engagement broke in November last year, we’ve been holding out for the government to do us all a solid and declare another bank holiday on the weekend of their wedding.

However, unlike the extra hols in April 2011 for Prince William and Kate Middleton’s nuptials, there’ll be no long weekend following Harry and Meghan’s ceremony on 19th May 2018.

:(

BUT, keen to not appear like complete and utter killjoys, the UK government has offered us some consolation as the pubs will be staying open later in celebration of the royal wedding.

Home Secretary Amber Rudd has announced licensing hours for pub’s in the UK will be extended over the weekend of 19thMay to celebrate the Harry and Meghan’s big day.

“As shown by the support for the proposal to extend licensing hours, it’s clear that the public back the idea of having more time to raise a glass to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle on a day of national celebration", Amber explained.

The weekend also sees football fans celebrate the FA Cup Final as well as the Scottish Cup Final, meaning the longer opening hours on Friday 18the and Saturday 19th May could add up to an extra £10 million for British pubs.

“This will allow the nation to celebrate and raise a glass to Harry and Meghan in a responsible manner, whilst giving a timely boost to the great British beer and pub sector,” Chief Executive of the British Beer and Pub Association, Brigid Simmonds told The Independent.
