We think of the 90s as a brilliant time when the Spice Girls stomped around in giant platform shoes and boybands leapt around on-stage doing cheesy dance routines.
But things could have been very different for one group if a certain comedian had got his way - Russell Brand auditioned for boyband 5ive.
However, it’s likely it wasn’t just his voice that counted against him when it came to scoring a place in the band as he was high on drugs when he auditioned.
The funnyman, who is known for his controversial jokes and pranks, and political rants, more than his vocal abilities, made the revelation during an appearance on James Corden’s Late Late Show in the US on Friday night.
Russell said said: “As a young man I made many mistakes. During one of my frenzies brought on by methamphetamine, I thought that perhaps I’d do rather well in the boyband 5ive.
“I believe I sand More Than Words by the band Extreme. I’ll recreate it if you want but it was a disaster then, and I think it would be even worse now.”
Despite his lack of success at getting into the band, Russell believes he would have been a good addition to the group.
He joked: “I could have been the maverick in the boyband. The troubled one, the first into rehab one.”
Fortunately, we can only imagine…
