You know that bit in The Notebook when it’s raining and Rachel McAdams is crying and telling Ryan Gosling that she waited for him and his shirt is all wet long pause to look at the picture? And you truly believed that those two would be together forever, as you wailed into the night?

We all wanted it to happen for the couple, who dated in real life from 2004 to 2008, but ever since Ryan had a baby with his The Place Beyond The Pines co-star Eva Mendes, it’s felt a bit, well, mean to say it out loud. Enter an embarrassing relative.

Ryan’s uncle, Kevin Gosling, 55, who keeps a framed photo in his living room of his nephew with Rachel, tells heat, “It sure seemed like [Rachel] was The One for him.”

Speaking exclusively to heat from his home in Ontario, Canada, where Ryan, 35, and Rachel, 37, grew up, Kevin describes meeting the “very down-to-earth” actress at Christmas in 2006.

“We really liked her,” he says. “We got to spend an evening with her, three or four hours. We sat drinking beers with her until two in the morning, laughing all the time. She didn’t seem like a movie star at all. It was amazing how comfortable we were, just sitting around the kitchen table, talking. We’re going to see her new movie Spotlight because we still like her, she’s a great actress. Why didn’t it work out? We don’t really know.”
