Well we reckon that’s exactly why God decided to present us with the super-talented and beautifully sad singing soul we know as Sam Smith.
The mega star has poured their heartbreak into two shiny award winning albums, and we’re nosy celeb-lovers who want to know everything we could possibly know about it all - who are the people behind the songs? First of all - what do we need to know about Sam Smith’s dating history?
In May 2014, Sam Smith was linked to Daisy Lowe after she appeared in his music video but they were quick to squash the rumours and set everyone straight about their sexuality. They came out as gay, but said they'd never had a boyfriend before.
In an interview with Fade, they said: “I’ve never been in a relationship before. I’ve only been in unrequited relationships where people haven’t loved me back. I guess I’m a little bit attracted to that in a bad way.”
In 2019, Sam came out as non-binary and asked the media and their fans to refer to them as "they" or "them."
Who is Sam Smith’s boyfriend?
Sam is currently single, after splitting from his ex-boyfriend Brandon Flynn off 13 Reasons Why in July 2019 and announcing the news via the very modern way - by deleting all traces of him from his Insta account.

Sam Smith and Jonathon Ziezel: 2014 – 2015
Shortly after Sam publicly announced their sexuality, they started dating dancer and model Jonathon Ziezel. The two met whilst filming the music video for Like I Can where Jonathon was one of 20 extras.
The pair confirmed they were together around October 2014 (via Instagram, of course) and even went to spend New Years Eve together in Australia. RIPPER.
However, two months later their relationship was apparently finito, with Sam confessing to audience members at a gig in Toronto, “This song is very special to me today, as I’ve actually had to do a very similar thing with someone I’ve been seeing,” before going on to sing their break-up song Good Thing.
Pretty clear message, we’d say.
Sam Smith and Charlie King: March 2015 – August 2015
Soon after the official split of Samathon, the tabloids went bananas after finding out that Sam and TOWIE star Charlie King, had apparently been spending time together at top-secret locations, including tiny unassuming pubs and Sam’s flat. The pair were thought to be avoiding attention to keep their relationship under wraps.
It all started when Charlie contacted the Grammy award-winning singer a total of 11 TIMES (crikey! Calm down, Charlie, love) with a flurry of complimentary tweets.
Unfortunately, our hopes of Sam appearing daaan the salon for his pijazzle were dashed when they were both denying that they were an item come August.
Sam never confirmed the relationship, but when heat caught up with Charlie at V Festival there was a VERY awkward moment when they bumped into eachother, and Charlie said they’d actually been seeing eachother for six months.
Sam Smith and Mystery Man: August 2015
This one’s a bit oh-la-la because no one ever really found out what happened to the hottie that Sam was spotted with at a Kylie Minogue gig. Onlookers claimed there were some tender cheek kisses during the concert, but again Sam denied there was anything saucy going on and we were all left to wonder where this hot slice got to.

Sam Smith and Tom Daley – February 2016
Sam got himself into a spot of bother earlier this year when they had a very public run-in with Tom Daley’s fiancé, Dustin Lance Black.
The Writings On The Wall singer was awarded with an Oscar for his James Bond warbling, and when accepting the coveted golden guy he claimed to be the first openly gay person to accept the award.
Awkward, because Dustin then stepped in to remind him that he himself, an openly gay man, had got his Oscar back in 2009. Dustin wasn’t happy leaving it there, and went on to warn Sam not to text his fiancé Tom Daley again.
Oh dear.
Everything was later cleared up and it turns out there was no funny business going on behind the scenes at either the Daley or Smith household, but poor Sam was so embarrassed he temporarily deleted his Twitter account.
Sam Smith and Jay Camilleri: March 2016
Model Jay Camilleri, who you might know from The Dirty Sexy Things, opened up about his relationship with Sam when the media started to report they were together. He told The Mirror that they’d been enjoying dates in Shoreditch House and that Sam’s was even going to help him start his charity for men with eating disorders.
This seemed to just fizzle out, and neither party made any further comment on whether they were an item or not.

Sam Smith and Andy Newton Lee: 2016
Ex-Hollyoaks star Andy Newton Lee, best known for playing Robbie Flynn, was linked to Sam after the pair were reportedly seen getting cosy at Coachella.
They were apparently texting, although nothing came of the relationship rumours.
Sam Smith and Brandon Flynn: 2019
Sam was dating Brandon Flynn off 13 Reasons Why, and they were absolutely adorbs. Sam told The Mirror during the relationship: "It's weird bringing out an album and not being single because when I brought out In The Lonely Hour, I was so lonely. But now I'm singing songs about another guy, I'm quite happy."
However, it was soon clear the pair had split after Sam deleted all traces of Brandon from their Instagram account and no comment has been made since.
Who was The Lonely Hour written about?
Rumour has it that the record was written about Sam’s manager, Elvin Smith. Sam has always referred to the relationship as unrequited, and has commented that the man in question was married and that there was nothing romantic from his side.
In an interview in 2015, Sam said: “The Lonely Hour is about a guy that I fell in love with last year, and he didn’t love me back. I think I’m over it now, but I was in a very dark place.”
He also accepted his Grammy awards for the album with a nod to the man in question, “Thank you so much for breaking my heart, because now I’ve got four Grammys.”
Sam admitted to making the record so that he wouldn’t get himself into the same situation again. Awww.
Who is Stay With Me about?
We reckon as it’s off The Lonely Hour album it’s referring to the same dude, but Sam put a nice spin on it at a gig once when they sang it as a love letter to their future boyfriend.
