Sam Smith believes that the X Factor is “damaging” for songwriters. Ouchies.

The Stay With Me singer told The Mirror: “It was a very conscious decision for me not to audition".

But he rather superiorly pointed out that although the show might not be right for everyone, it suits those who just want to sing.

"I feel that* X Factor* is perfect for singers who sing, and that's all they want to do. They don't care what they sing, they just love singing..." Backhanded compliment, much?

He went on: "The minute I started writing music, I knew that none of that stuff was going to be for me. I want people judging me on my voice and my songs - that's what's important to me."

The Smithster also confessed that he was disappointed that he didn’t get to meet the show’s judges while performing as a special guest.

"I would have thought they would come and say hello, or I'd have got to go and say hello. But I never got to see them."

Hmm, couldn’t be anything to do with your decided lack of reverence for their show, now, could it, Sam?
