Following weeks of speculation about her future with the Fifty Shades of Grey films, Director Sam Taylor Johnson has confirmed that she will not be making the next films in the franchise, Fifty Shades Darker and Fifty Shades Freed. And rumour has it, it's down to her feud with the book's author, EL James.
In a statement to Deadline, Taylor-Johnson said: "Directing Fifty Shades Of Grey has been an intense and incredible journey for which I am hugely grateful.
"I have Universal to thank for that. I forged close and lasting relationships with the cast, producers and crew and most especially with Dakota and Jamie.
"While I will not be returning to direct the sequels, I wish nothing but success to whosoever takes on the exciting challenges of films two and three."
Note how there is no mention of EL James. At ALL.
Sam has previously spoken out about the creative differences she experienced on set with EL James, telling Porter magazine:
"We definitely fought - but they were creative fights and we would resolve them.
"We would have proper on-set barneys, and I'm not confrontational, but it was about finding a way between the two of us, satisfying her vision of what she'd written as well as my need to visualise this person on screen. But, you know, we got there."
She also told Red magazine:
"I want to protect my vision and that's the hardest thing. There are so many voices. You have to try and keep all those people at bay."
Although the film had a mixed critical reaction upon its release, it was a huge smash at the box office, with many fans praising the way the books had been adapted for the big screen (and how some of the cringe-tastic dialogue had been cut out). But some had complained the film wasn't raunchy enough compared to James' bestselling books.
So who will take on the role next? Angelina Jolie has been linked to the films in the past, but has previously laughed off the rumours, admitting: "I'm better at telling some stories than others".
