It's been a very long wait - thirty one years, to be exact - since Top Gun was released back in 1986, and ever since, the world has awaited the sequel.
There have been rumours, there have been very, VERY leading tweets, such as this one from Gerry Bruckheimer:
But nothing has ever been confirmed - with Tom Cruise saying that the pair were only "trying to figure it out" - until now.
While on Australian talk show Sunrise, Tom dropped the exclusive news when asked about gossip surrounding the sequel: "It’s true. I’m going to start filming it probably in the next year."
"It is definitely happening. You are the first people that I’ve said. You asked me, and so I’m telling you, it is going to happen."
You can't really get more definitive than that - and we're really glad Tom is heading back to the Dangerzone. No word if Val Kilmer will be joining him; the star recently revealed he's beaten throat cancer, and is taking some much needed time out.
Twitter is enjoying the prospect of a Top Gun 2 movie with nobody but Tom Cruise returning. Albeit in a sarcastic way.
However, we think it's gonna be awesome. And maybe room for some new, fit and topless young pilots - which can only be a good thing.
