QI team captain and kindly wordsmith Stephen Fry has announced that he won’t be on Twitter for the next month while working on a filming project in a place where it’s “unsafe” to tweet.

He posted a farewell to his followers on the site, writing: “Closing down on Twitter while filming. In a place whence I've been advised it is safest not to tweet. See you December. Here goes..."

No doubt his absence will tear quite a hole in the Twittersphere – Stephen has more than 7.8 million followers and regularly shares his thoughts on subjects ranging from gay rights and charity initiatives to British arts.

It’s not clear exactly where he’s filming, but some fans reckon that he’s secretly working on the new Star Wars movie, which would be pretty rad.

The actor has abandoned the site for brief spells before, and in 2009 he famously tried to quit because there was “too much aggression and unkindness all round”.

Still, he’s never managed to stay gone for long. Let’s hope the same goes for this time.
