Strictly’s Jay McGuiness on dance partner Aliona: ‘As long as she’s happy, I’m happy’

After he became the first contestant to receive a coveted “10” on this year’s Strictly, The Wanted singer Jay McGuiness quickly became the favourite to win the competition. But ever since he was pictured with his arms wrapped around his dance partner Aliona Vilani after a night out last month, there have been rumours that the couple are enjoying more than just a dance-based relationship.

The pair have both denied this is the case, especially given that Aliona married sales exec Vincent Kavanagh only last year. But when we caught up with Jay, 25, it seemed the gossip was starting to get to him…

You’ve stressed that you and Aliona are just friends – is all the attention you both receive affecting you?

It can become a distraction and it makes me want to disappear after the show. But at the same time, I feel like I’m in a lovely bubble. As long as Ali’s happy, I am happy.

Are you scared of walking down the street together in case you get pictured?

No. We get on really well, but the show is so successful and I just think people make stuff up. We ignore it.

Jeremy Vine told us you have set up a Strictly WhatsApp group for all the celebs and dancers to chat on…

Yes, Daniel [O’Donnell, who left the competition last month] sent a picture of himself by a beach in Tenerife. I thought, “Here I am, in a London studio!”
