Tom Hardy explains why he was annoyed over question about sexuality

Tom Hardy has explained why he was “annoyed” about a journalist asking him about his sexuality during a Legend press conference.

He was quizzed by a reporter from LGBT news outlet Daily Xtra about an interview he gave to Attitude back in 2008.

Tom asked outright if the journalist was asking him about his sexuality and when he was told yes, he simply replied, "Why?" and moved on to the next reporter.

The 38 year old has now explained why he had such a severe reaction to the journalist’s question.

"That really, really annoyed me," Tom told Entertainment Weekly. "It was just the inelegance of being asked in a room full of people.

"Now I'm happy to have a conversation, a discussion, at a reasonable time, about anything. I'm confident in my own sexuality, and I'm also confident in my own being and talking about any issue you want to talk about it. But there is a time and a place for that."

Tom – who plays both Reggie and Ronnie Kray in Legend – added that he found it "very humiliating" for someone to decide to ask a question designed at "zeroing in on a reaction" to become a topic of discussion.

"It's so important to the LGBT [community] that people actually feel safe about their sexuality and are able to speak freely and not be stigmatised or feel like they are being pointed out," he added.

"Why point me out, assuming that I'm gay because I'm ambiguous about it, which I'm very clear if you look into what I've said in the past."

He added that he is "quite sensitive" and felt as though he had let people down with his response.

"Should I come out of the closet when I'm not in one?" he asked.

"I ought to maybe come out of the closet, even though that's a lie, to do the right thing. Or, if I say no, then I'm homophobic?"
