Radio 1’s Big Weekend has kicked off this Bank Holiday, less than a week after the Manchester terror attacks and musicians including Katy Perry paid an emotional tribute.

Katy Perry was the headliner on Saturday night and stopped mid-performance to address the crowd, ‘I think we are extremely brave. We are all in this together aren’t we?

‘You know what? We will still dance and we will still make music. This next one goes out to Manchester. It is for all the people who knows what it means for music to touch a community.’

The crowd were then instructed to touch the person to the left or right of them and told them: ‘This is a part of us they will never take away. Rest in peace Manchester,’ before playing an acoustic version of her song Part Of Me.

On 22 May, 22 innocent people lost their lives after Ariana's Dangerous Woman show in Manchester in a terror attack.

Lorde also paid an heartfelt tribute during her performance.

The singer told the crowd, ‘never let one person get in the way of your love for live music’ before weeping on stage.

Emile Sande continued the tributes and poignantly told the crowd ‘use your voice to change the world.’

Nick Grimshaw said to the crowd, before a minutes silence;

‘We’ve been completely heartbroken and we thought it might be nice if we could take a minute’s silence for everyone who lost their lives in Manchester on Monday. After that, we’re gonna make as much noise as we can – as a community of music lovers.’

Our thoughts are with all those affected.
