Victoria Beckham’s panic to get her family home

After six years of hard work, David Beckham was meant to have his moment of glory last week as his very own football team made their home debut at their newly built stadium in Miami. Instead, he and Victoria found themselves caught up in the coronavirus panic sweeping the world, worried they could be stuck the US rather than back with their extended family back home.

David had flown wife Victoria and their four children – Brooklyn, 21, Romeo, 17, Cruz, 15, and eight-year-old Harper – over to America along with Romeo and Brooklyn's girlfriends for the first match at the new stadium. But then came the news that the MLS had decided to postpone the season indefinitely due to the coronavirus pandemic.

At first, we're told the Beckhams decided to stay out in Miami for a holiday in the sunshine and to help David get over his disappointment. They even made the most of their time in the stadium by posing for photos and having a kickabout on the empty pitch. But after a couple of days, the global CV situation became increasing serious, with travel bans put in place and people urged to stay at home.

Worried they would be stuck in America, the Beckhams took drastic action to make sure they could all get home – with the help of a £100,000 flight on a private jet.

“Their Miami Spring break turned into a bit of a nightmare for them – but the one saving grace is at least they are all together as a family,” our Beckham insider says. “Victoria in particular was really panicked that they would be stuck in Miami for the foreseeable future and while it’s a great place, she just wanted to be home in the UK. Like everyone else, she's been really anxious over all the headlines, and the only thing she wanted was to be in lockdown at home.

“There was worry that David may have had to stay in Miami while the club deals with this crisis – after all, he is the most high-profile of its owners and the fans, investors and players need to know the upstairs support is there. But everyone agreed that health and families are the most important thing. So, instead of taking their chances with a commercial flight, the Beckhams decided to charter a private jet – at a cost of around £100,000 – to make sure they all made it home safely.”

Our insider tells us that although he's relieved to be back in the UK, David was initially torn over whether he should have been leaving at all.

“David really was in two minds about what to do,” our insider adds. “His family obviously always comes first but he has always been so committed to Inter Miami and wanted to prove that. But he knew he couldn’t let Victoria fly back with the kids on her own and risk being separate from them at such a scary and worrying time. He also had to think about his parents and wanted to make sure he’s there for them as well.

“Victoria was monitoring them all to make sure nobody was unwell but she felt very uneasy about being out there if one of them fell ill and just wanted to go home. Thankfully money is never going to be an issue for them."

They are now back at their country home in the Cotswolds and David, 44, posted a picture of himself on Instagram saying, “Staying at home for the ones that we love. Thank you @kevinbacon for nominating me. I’m staying at home for Victoria and our kids, including Cruzie who’s made his way into this photo. Let’s stop the coronavirus spread together.”

Victoria, 45, also posted on Instagram to pay tribute to the NHS and telling everyone to keep safe. And while the health of the family and others is the most important thing, we’re told it has also got them thinking about their future and what changes they may have to make. The couple are known for their jet set lifestyle and they are both aware of the impact of the crisis on their fashion and footballing businesses.

“Of course, they only worried about the outbreak at the moment but it casts doubt on their lifestyle in the future,” we’re told. “They jet around the world and Victoria has so many business meetings all over the place in the next few weeks and she's not sure how to handle it. Especially as this could go on for months. On the one hand she's trying to keep a positive face for the kids, as she knows they need to see her confident during this time, but she's also very worried about it all.

“It will have a huge impact on both of their businesses. People will be reluctant to go into crowds for a long time now, just as David was really ramping up the publicity for the Miami team – and she knows that people who don't go out won't be buying her make-up, especially not when they are desperately trying to buy essentials for the household. But she knows they can all get through it as a family and that they are exceptionally lucky. They both feel so grateful for what they have.”
